Epic charter school start date12/29/2023 ![]() ![]() And as we discovered later, that there quite a few things to learn, quite a few questionable expenses, uses on personal credit cards, on political donations, that were allegedly coming out of that Learning Fund. And they fought tooth and nail to keep the public from seeing that. And they argued even to the state auditor that you can't look at this because it belongs to a private business. ![]() It was a separate bank account that was paying for extracurricular activities, for supplemental curricula, and it was under the charge of this private business.Īnd they would argue, they would deny records requests. And then they also handed funds over for the Learning Fund. The school would receive its funds from the state, pay 10% of its funds to the management company just solely for managing the school. Martinez-Keel: Basically, lawmakers allege that this was a slush fund, that it was a hotbed for embezzlement, and nobody could really look at this - at least not from the public - because the co-founders’ company, which managed the school and earned 10% of the school's annual revenue, this company called Epic Youth Services, was actually who was in charge of the Learning Fund. Wallis: That sounds great, what happened? ![]() So they could take that money and pay for karate classes or a football team, something like that. It could be used in a number of different ways, but it really was to pay for extracurricular activities that they might have had in a school or a traditional school environment that they wouldn't have in virtual school. Epic used the Learning Fund to pay for students’ extracurricular activities, to cover any supplemental curricula that they wanted to use to supplement their learning. And that was when they first laid out to the public what their investigation really was.Īnd one of the throughlines of this whole scandal has been the Learning Fund. But that was the reason that this was filed in court publicly in the first place. Which, the teacher, you know, was only a small part of the actual court document. Martinez-Keel: Where do I begin? I would say the first time the public really got any insight into what law enforcement was looking at was in July 2019, and that's when they released a search warrant of a teacher's house. Wallis: Well, so there were a few different schemes that Ben Harris, David Chaney and Josh Brock were alleged to have been part of. But for a school district to exist solely in a virtual format - or, Epic would say not solely, but mostly in a virtual format - that was something pretty new in our state. Obviously, there were methods of delivering online school in the state that existed before then. I mean, you can see their rapid, rapid growth, obviously, that what went into supercharged mode during the pandemic when a lot of folks were fearful of sending their children to a school building.Īnd so, you know, they came in and they shook things up because they were delivering school in a new way. I think, you know, Epic for a long time would make the argument that part of why they were so under scrutiny is because they were delivering something entirely new to our state's education landscape, and that there were people who didn't like how they disrupted the status quo - which, one can say they definitely did. They started in 2011, and it wasn't until 2013 that they came under criminal investigation. Martinez-Keel: Epic Charter Schools was our state's first virtual charter school, which is obviously a charter school handled mostly in a virtual format. How did Epic start and what was it supposed to be? So let's start the saga at the beginning. But before we get into all of that, I wanted to remind listeners of how we got here. And now the new state attorney general announced his office was going to take back control of prosecuting the Epic founders and CFO. The state auditor indicated last week there were millions more dollars involved in the scandal than what we thought. ![]() Wallis: So Epic Charter School, back in the news. Nuria Martinez-Keel: Thanks for having me. Martinez-Keel covers education at The Oklahoman and has been with the publication for four years.īeth Wallis: Well, Nuria, thank you for coming and talking with me today. That’s why StateImpact’s Beth Wallis asked Oklahoman newspaper reporter Nuria Martinez-Keel to get us up-to-speed on the last decade of Epic’s scandals. As more news emerges about embezzlement schemes at Epic Charter Schools, it might be difficult to keep up with the saga. ![]()

The reservation had been established in 1825. When Kansas was admitted to the Union as a state in 1861, the Osage Indian reservation occupied a large tract of land near the southern border. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, in Canada, after successfully capturing two forts and the city of Montreal. Montgomery County was established on February 26, 1867. In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. In 1803, most of the land for modern day Kansas was acquired by the United States from France as part of the 828,000 square mile Louisiana Purchase for 2.83 cents per acre. Magical realism books for young adults12/28/2023 ![]() For example, ghosts are typical figures in magical realism novels at the same time, many cultures consider ghosts to be a natural reality. What’s especially troubling about this is the fact that this application tends to come from a Eurocentric position that labels “magical” any beliefs considered “irrational” or “unreal” from a very narrow perspective. ![]() ![]() The major issue with the term magical realism is that it has a history of being applied to works by minority writers, especially BIPOC writers the world wide. Similarly, Cherokee writer Brandon Hobson has discussed what he sees as the problematic use of the word magic, explaining that magic is “a little cheap way of talking about it.” They’re not alone. Toni Morrison was very public about the downsides of using magical realism to define her works (and those of other BIPOC writers). In his essay “ What We Talk About When We Talk About Magical Realism,” Fernando Sdrigotti underscores the damaging ways that magical realism has been used to essentialize, exoticize, and pigeonhole writers of color - most especially Latinx and Latin American writers. Others are very specific, considering only works where the tone is highly objective - even journalistic - but the characters or events break from reality.ĭespite the term “magical realism” having its roots in 1920s German art criticism, most literary uses of the term are traced to the Latin American “Boom” literature of the 1960s. Some scholars include anything that is not typically the domain of the “real,” the broadness of which can see the label “magical realism” applied to folklore, mythology, fairytales, fantasy, speculative fiction, paranormal literature, and more. Regardless of how much magic there is, what counts as “magic” is widely disputed and largely disagreed upon. Sometimes the magic permeates the text, jumping out at you from every page, while in other instances the magic is occasional. Beyond that, well, there’s a lot of confusion. Generally speaking, magical realism novels are characterized by its overall adherence to realism…except for the magic. So broad, in fact, that it can absorb other genres (like fantasy). What defines a magical realism novel? The presence of magic, obviously! But that’s an extremely broad definition.
